Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s criticism of the government’s 24-hour economy policy, describing his arguments as a “joke”.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Monday, October 19, Mr Kwakye Ofosu accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer of making claims that lacked a sound economic basis.
“The truth is that, you should not have called me on this matter because you know that what Bawumia is saying is nothing more than a joke,” he said.
He further described the former Vice President’s arguments as “voodoo economics”, insisting that the economic indicators did not support his assessment of the government’s performance.
Dr Bawumia had criticised President John Dramani Mahama’s implementation of the 24-hour economy, arguing that the flagship policy had failed to deliver its promised jobs and that the government was using it as propaganda.
He also questioned the impact of the initiative on businesses and livelihoods, including concerns about the demolition of structures linked to proposed 24-hour markets.
In response, Mr Kwakye Ofosu pointed to inflation, public debt, currency depreciation and losses suffered by bondholders under the previous NPP administration, arguing that the current economy was in a better position.
“The undeniable, unmistakable truth is that this economy, as we have it, is much, much, much better than he handed it over,” he said.
The minister acknowledged that challenges remained but maintained that the government would continue working to improve economic conditions.
