The Ministry of Education has called an urgent meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to resolve the ongoing strike by university administrators.

The meeting, scheduled for Monday, October 12, 2026, comes as the industrial action disrupts preparations for the 2026/2027 academic year and forces two major public universities to postpone their reopening dates.

The University of Ghana was due to resume on Monday but has postponed the reopening, with a new date expected to be announced later.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has also deferred its resumption, originally scheduled for October 13, citing the strike’s impact on its operations.

In a statement issued on Sunday, October 11, the Ministry said the meeting would focus on dialogue to reach an amicable settlement.

It reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing organised labour’s concerns through established negotiation processes and urged all parties to approach the discussions in good faith.

The Ministry also appealed to GAUA’s leadership to work with the relevant stakeholders towards an early resolution, stressing the effects of the strike on students, university communities and the national interest.

“Government remains hopeful that the meeting will yield a positive outcome and facilitate a swift return to normal academic and administrative activities across affected tertiary institutions,” the statement added.
