New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Women’s Organiser Mavis Hawa Koomson has called for a swift and independent investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving 19 female students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School.
In a statement issued on October 19, 2026, Hawa Koomson expressed concern over reports that headmaster Zakaria Abdulai allegedly raped, sexually harassed, and assaulted students.
Hawa Koomson called on the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, urging prosecutors to pursue legal action where sufficient evidence is established, regardless of the persons involved.
“A child knows no political party colours. We must never subordinate the dignity, safety, and protection of our children to partisan considerations,” she stated.
The NPP official also expressed concern about reports of possible intimidation and reprisals against the affected students and their families. She urged the relevant authorities to protect their identities and ensure they receive the support needed throughout the investigative process.
She called on the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to work with child protection organisations to provide counselling, psychological care, medical assistance and other necessary support.
Beyond the case, Hawa Koomson urged the GES to review its child protection policies, reporting procedures and accountability mechanisms to strengthen safeguards against sexual abuse in schools.
She also appealed to women across the country, particularly the Vice President, to take an active interest in the matter and support efforts to protect the students and secure justice.
Hawa Koomson stressed that the allegations should be addressed without political interference, adding that the safety and welfare of children must remain a shared national responsibility.
