Rashid Tanko Computer, the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, has defended Emelia Afi Agbenyo’s appointment as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), insisting that she is highly qualified for the role.
Speaking on TV3’s Daily Brief on Monday, October 12, he argued that Ms Agbenyo’s experience and qualifications make her suitable for the position, adding that she could even serve as an EC Commissioner.
“She is even supposed to be the Commissioner but not a Deputy because she is very much qualified,” he said.
His comments come amid concerns about the political neutrality of the Electoral Commission following Ms Agbenyo’s appointment.
President John Dramani Mahama, who swore in Ms Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah on Monday, urged both appointees to carry out their duties fairly and without favouring any political party.
He said their responsibility was to the people of Ghana and stressed that he expected no preferential treatment for himself, his government or the NDC.
“Ensure that every eligible citizen can participate in our electoral process and that every valid vote counts and reflects the will of the people,” the President said.
“The duty is to the people of Ghana; discharge your duty without favouring any candidate or party. I expect no preferential treatment for myself, my government and party,” he added.
The appointments fill vacancies left by former Deputy Chairpersons Dr Bossman Eric Asare and Samuel Tettey.
Dr Asare resigned effective July 31, 2026, to return to academia at the University of Ghana, while Mr Tettey retired after reaching the mandatory retirement age.
