The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the government to clarify whether National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has been dismissed or suspended following the controversy surrounding Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup visa arrangements.

The party says the public deserves a clear account of the status of the NSA boss amid ongoing questions about the handling of the visa facilitation process.

Mr Ampofo Ankrah was asked by President John Dramani Mahama to step aside as investigations into alleged irregularities surrounding arrangements for Ghanaians seeking to attend the tournament continue.

However, the NPP argues that the government must explain the precise administrative action taken against him, rather than leave his status open to speculation.

The controversy has intensified following allegations about beneficiary selection, visa allocations and payments associated with the arrangements. Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah has also petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate suspected irregularities involving state institutions and other parties.

The NPP’s demand comes amid calls for accountability and transparency in the management of public institutions, particularly where public officials face scrutiny over the use of their positions.

The party maintains that Ghanaians should be informed whether Mr Ampofo Ankrah remains in office, has been formally suspended or has been dismissed, as these are different administrative outcomes with distinct implications.

The allegations surrounding the visa process remain subject to investigation, and no conclusion of wrongdoing should be drawn against individuals before the relevant authorities complete their work.
