National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team member Ibrahim Ali has denied claims that the government is protecting Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) headmaster Zakaria Abdulai, who is accused of sexually abusing students.
Speaking to Isaac Addae on Starr FM’s The Verdict, Ali said the reported arrest of Abdulai and the disciplinary measures taken by the NDC showed that political affiliation would not exempt anyone from accountability.
He disclosed that Abdulai had resigned as the party’s Juaben Constituency Secretary and withdrawn from the constituency chairmanship race following the allegations.
Ali said the authorities must investigate allegations of criminal conduct and establish the facts before reaching conclusions, stressing the importance of due process.
However, he admitted that he was unhappy with the delay in arresting the headmaster, arguing that the action should have been taken earlier.
“I was not happy at all when, in the first place, this whole thing happened; this gentleman was not picked up earlier,” he said.
He maintained that everyone must be subject to the law, regardless of their position or political connections.
“No one is bigger than the laws of Ghana. Not even the president of the land,” he said.
The case has drawn public attention following an investigative documentary by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, which detailed allegations of sexual abuse involving students at Obuasi SHTS. Investigations into the allegations are ongoing.
