Legendary artiste, Okyeame Kwame has called on the government to introduce free university education for children of farmers, arguing that the policy could help strengthen local agriculture and reduce the country’s dependence on imported food.
Speaking on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz on Monday, October 12, the rapper said supporting farmers’ children through tertiary education would encourage farming families to remain in the sector and inspire younger generations to consider agriculture as a career.
He recalled scholarship schemes that previously supported farmers’ children and questioned why similar assistance was no longer prominent.
“When we were growing up we had the farmers scholarship. I don’t know where it has passed,” he said, adding that university education should also be made free for farmers’ children, following the introduction of free education at the primary and secondary levels.
Okyeame Kwame linked his proposal to Ghana’s continued importation of food products, including onions, arguing that inadequate incentives could discourage farmers from encouraging their children to pursue agriculture.
He stressed that farmers play a critical role in sustaining the economy and supporting essential sectors such as education and healthcare.
According to the musician, beneficiaries of such a scholarship programme could study agriculture at university and return to their communities with improved knowledge, technology and skills to help modernise farming and increase productivity.
He said he would implement the proposal if he were president, describing investment in farmers’ children as a way to support both agricultural households and the wider economy.
The call comes amid ongoing discussions about improving food production, making agriculture more attractive to young people and reducing Ghana’s reliance on imported food.
