President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned two new Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds at Ahyiaem and Nsuapemkrom in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region as part of efforts to expand access to primary healthcare.
The facilities were commissioned on the first day of the President’s two-day Resetting Ghana tour of the region.
President Mahama said the projects were funded through proceeds from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), following his administration’s decision to uncap the fund and allocate 80 per cent directly to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), rather than centralising the funds in Accra.
“These were built from proceeds of the District Assemblies Common Fund. As a policy, I have directed all MMDCEs to construct two CHPS compounds, two classroom blocks, and a 24-hour economy market. These projects will be distributed across different communities within their respective districts,” he noted.
He explained that the policy was intended to enable local authorities to provide essential infrastructure across their districts. The annual projects are expected to include two CHPS compounds, two-unit classroom blocks and a 24-hour economy market, alongside the completion of inherited projects.
The President also assured residents that all patients who visit the CHPS compounds would receive free treatment under the Free Primary Healthcare Programme.
He further disclosed that the Ahyiaem facility would soon be registered by the Ghana Health Service under the programme to enable residents to benefit from the initiative.
At the commissioning ceremony, the Dormaahemaa, Dr Akosua Frema Edwaaben, pledged the community’s commitment to maintaining the facility to ensure its continued operation and delivery of healthcare services.
The two compounds are expected to bring essential medical services closer to residents and strengthen primary healthcare delivery in the Ahafo Region.
