Lawyer and presidential staffer Beatrice Annan has called for allegations of sexual abuse to be taken seriously and investigated fairly, stressing that protecting innocent people must never come at the expense of silencing potential victims.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Annan shared a deeply personal reflection on the trauma victims may experience when they speak out about sexual abuse but are not believed.
She asked readers to imagine being sexually abused by a headmaster while in secondary school and subsequently being disbelieved when reporting the incident.
Questioning whether past false accusations should justify dismissing other allegations, she pointed out that some individuals have also been found guilty of sexual misconduct.
Annan further revealed that she frequently receives messages from men asking her to mentor their daughters, a responsibility she believes comes with a duty to advocate for vulnerable girls.
“What kind of mentor would I be if I couldn’t speak up for girls who may be suffering in silence?” she asked.
She emphasised that the issue was personal to her and underscored the importance of creating an environment where victims can speak without fear of being dismissed.
According to Annan, the pursuit of justice requires a fair balance: protecting the innocent while ensuring that potential victims receive a hearing and that every allegation is properly investigated.
