Traders at Tafo Moro Market in the Old Tafo Municipality of the Ashanti Region are appealing for government assistance after a fire destroyed stalls and merchandise at the popular second-hand shoe trading centre.
The blaze has disrupted commercial activities at the market, leaving affected traders to assess their losses and clear debris from their burnt stalls.
Some traders were seen salvaging items from the remains of their businesses as they tried to recover whatever could be saved from the destruction.
For many of those affected, the damage threatens their ability to resume trading, particularly if they lack the funds needed to replace lost merchandise and rebuild their stalls.
The traders have therefore called on the government and relevant authorities to provide support to help them recover from the incident and restore their livelihoods.
The cause of the fire and the total value of the losses had not been established in the initial reports. Details regarding the number of affected stalls and whether anyone sustained injuries were also not immediately available.
The incident comes amid a series of fire outbreaks in Kumasi within a few days. Two other fires had already affected trading activities in the city, including a blaze at Kumasi Central Market that destroyed traders’ stalls, goods and working capital.
The affected traders are now looking to the authorities for assistance as they assess the damage and consider how to resume operations.
