Two final-year students of Ekumfi Obidan-Potwabin Basic School in the Central Region have died after a tipper truck reportedly knocked them down while they were returning home from school.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the Ekumfi District, leaving another student critically injured.
The three students had attended voluntary classes organised by the school to help final-year candidates keep up with their studies amid the ongoing nationwide teachers’ strike. They were reportedly on their way home when the tipper truck, said to have been speeding, struck them.
One of the students died at the scene, while another was pronounced dead after being rushed to the Roman Catholic Hospital in Mankessim for emergency treatment.
The third student sustained serious injuries and remains in critical condition at the hospital.
Emmanuel Ekow Arthur, Deputy Chairman of the school’s Management Board, confirmed the deaths and said the tragedy had plunged the school and surrounding community into mourning.
The voluntary lessons had been introduced to prevent final-year students from falling behind academically while teachers remain on strike.
The accident has also renewed concerns among residents about the speed of heavy-duty vehicles using roads in the community. Residents are calling for measures including speed ramps, additional road signs and stronger enforcement to protect schoolchildren and pedestrians.
The bodies of the two students have been deposited at a morgue, while police have begun investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
