Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has alleged that some New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs are being threatened and intimidated when they criticise the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking in an interview on Adom TV on September 29, 2026, he said the alleged intimidation had made some NPP lawmakers reluctant to speak openly on issues they would otherwise raise in Parliament.
“Anytime we criticise, the NPP MPs are threatened, and I am the one telling you. Sometimes, if some of my MPs want to talk, they will send you a message that, ‘Leader, I can’t talk,’ because once I am about to talk, they will threaten me,” he alleged.
Mr Afenyo-Markin also accused the NDC government of becoming increasingly intolerant of criticism from the opposition.
“You see, the NDC in government has become so intolerant, and anytime NPP MPs criticise them, they get threatened. But politics is all about democracy,” he said.
He claimed some of his colleagues had privately told him they were afraid to speak on certain issues because of the alleged threats.
The Minority Leader further alleged that some NPP MPs were occasionally invited to the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI), now known as the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and kept there for several hours without being questioned.
“Sometimes they invite some of the MPs to BNI for about eight hours, and they won’t ask them anything. A day that Parliament will have something important, then they will invite them,” he alleged.
He said such actions, if established, could affect opposition lawmakers’ ability to freely perform their parliamentary duties and participate in democratic debate.
