A fire has destroyed several mattresses and damaged a large section of a showroom at Sokoban-Ampayoo in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, triggering efforts by residents to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby properties.

The incident occurred near Kumasi Hospital on Friday, October 9, 2026. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and the full extent of the damage to the showroom and its contents has yet to be determined.

As the flames spread through the facility, residents rushed to save vehicles parked at a commercial garage next to the showroom, amid fears that the fire could extend to the adjoining premises.

Residents initially attempted to contain the blaze while waiting for personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to arrive.

A subsequent report indicated that firefighters later reached the scene after residents had managed to bring the flames under control.

The fire destroyed several mattresses, while a significant portion of the showroom was consumed by the blaze. However, details regarding the financial value of the losses, possible injuries and the identity of the showroom’s owners were not immediately available.

The incident adds to concerns about fire outbreaks affecting commercial properties, where flames can threaten neighbouring businesses, vehicles and other assets.
