The Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢10 million by the High Court in Accra.
Her Ladyship Justice Charity Akosua Asem, JA, sitting as an additional High Court Judge, granted the bail with a condition that the MP provides two sureties, both of whom must be Members of Parliament, without justification.
The case has been adjourned to November 2, 2026, when the matter is expected to return before the court.
The bail ruling follows the MP’s arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after he voluntarily surrendered himself to the anti-graft agency on October 1, 2026.
Background to the case
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, who is also a lawyer and Senior Partner at Sarkodie, Baffour Awuah and Partners, has been under investigation by EOCO over transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited.
EOCO has said its investigations cover allegations including criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering and tax-related offences, among other matters. The allegations remain subject to the ongoing legal process and have not been established against the MP.
The investigation intensified after an Accra High Court issued a warrant authorising EOCO to arrest the MP. The development followed efforts by the agency to secure his attendance before investigators.
On October 1, Baffour Awuah voluntarily reported to EOCO accompanied by his lawyers and was subsequently arrested. EOCO said he was cooperating with investigators and urged the public to avoid speculation or premature conclusions about the case.
Dispute over the transactions
The case centres on legal work undertaken by Baffour Awuah’s former law firm for SIC Life Savings and Loans in connection with efforts to recover funds from Equity Savings and Loans.
According to an account provided by Baffour Awuah, SIC Life had invested approximately GH¢3.5 million with Equity Savings and Loans, with the amount allegedly increasing to about GH¢14 million with accumulated interest. His firm was subsequently engaged to pursue recovery of the funds.
The MP has maintained that the legal work was undertaken on behalf of his client and has disputed the suggestion that the transaction amounted to criminal conduct. His lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, has similarly argued that the matter arose from legitimate legal services and transactions carried out on the instructions of SIC Life.
The legal dispute has attracted significant public attention, particularly following the confrontation surrounding an earlier attempt by EOCO to arrest the MP at the Accra High Court in September.
The latest development means Baffour Awuah will remain on bail as the case proceeds, with the court set to hear the matter again on November 2, 2026.
The granting of bail does not amount to a determination of guilt or innocence. The allegations against the MP remain before the court.
