Jonathan McKinsey, an engineering executive with The New York Times, has been shot dead at a sports complex in Dublin, California, with police arresting his in-laws in connection with the killing.
McKinsey, 40, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in a parking lot on Saturday afternoon. Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene after officers responded to reports of a shooting.
The two suspects, identified as 77-year-old Shouyong Zhang and 77-year-old Shili Chen, were arrested nearby and booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder.
According to police, there are no additional suspects and authorities do not believe there is any continuing threat to the public.
McKinsey served as director of engineering for The New York Times Games department and had worked for the company for more than three years.
The shooting occurred in a busy public area, with witnesses reportedly present when the incident happened. Police said officers were alerted after receiving multiple 911 calls while a sergeant in the area discovered McKinsey lying in the parking lot.
Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the killing. However, court records indicate that McKinsey and his estranged wife, Candice Jang, had been involved in a prolonged legal dispute involving custody of their three children.
The couple had been married since 2012 and had three children. Court records show that their legal dispute included allegations of domestic and child abuse, which McKinsey denied.
The Dublin Sports Grounds was temporarily closed while investigators processed the scene but has since reopened.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing, while the two suspects are expected to appear in court as the case moves forward.
