Polo Beach Club, a popular entertainment venue near the Labadi Beach Resort in Accra, has been demolished as authorities continue a clearance exercise targeting structures in the La Beach area.
The demolition took place on Friday, October 2, as personnel from the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service supervised the operation.
The exercise follows an earlier operation in the area that faced resistance from some residents and owners of affected structures. The continued presence of security personnel has since allowed the authorities to proceed with the clearance.
The demolition comes against the backdrop of a land ownership dispute involving Polo Beach Club and Labadi Beach Hotel.
Operators of Polo Beach Club, Spartan-Ives Limited, had previously gone to court seeking an injunction to prevent the club from being demolished while the dispute over the beachfront land was being litigated. The club maintained that it had a 20-year lease from the La Stool and had obtained relevant permits to operate.
The club had also alleged that threats to demolish the facility were made despite the land dispute being before the courts. Those allegations have not been determined by a court.
