Former Minister for Special Development Initiatives and Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has been elected as the National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Hawa Koomson won with 783 votes, defeating her contender, Hajia Safia Mohammed, who polled 429 votes, at the party’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

More than 7,000 delegates from across the country participated in the election as the NPP selected new national executives to lead its reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Hawa Koomson first entered Parliament in 2012 as the NPP’s representative for Awutu Senya East and retained the seat in the 2016 and 2020 general elections.

She served in the Akufo-Addo administration, first as Minister for Special Development Initiatives, then as Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development in 2021.

After three consecutive terms in Parliament, she lost the Awutu Senya East seat to the NDC’s Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor in the 2024 general election.

Her election marks her return to a prominent national role within the NPP, where she will lead the party’s women’s wing as it prepares for the 2028 elections.
