The White House has reaffirmed Donald Trump’s position as President of the United States following the Democratic Party’s sweeping victories in the midterm elections, which handed the opposition control of both chambers of Congress.

In a post on social media, the White House declared, “Trump is still your president”, following results that marked a major setback for the Republican Party and changed the balance of power in Washington.

The Democrats secured enough seats to take control of the House of Representatives, surpassing the 218-seat threshold required for a majority. They also won control of the Senate, giving the party influence over both chambers for the remaining two years of Trump’s presidency.

The White House message appeared to underline that, despite the electoral defeat, Trump remains in office and will continue serving his presidential term.

The Republican losses came amid widespread voter concerns over the rising cost of living. Trump acknowledged that the war with Iran and economic pressures contributed to his party’s poor performance.

Democrats recorded notable victories in traditionally Republican states, including Texas, South Carolina and Kansas. Results in Alaska and Mississippi were still being awaited at the time of reporting.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries described the outcome as a “red, white and blue moment”, celebrating his party’s return to control of the chamber.

The change in congressional leadership is expected to complicate Trump’s legislative agenda, as Democrats will have greater authority to influence government spending, conduct investigations and challenge administration policies.

Although the midterm results do not affect Trump’s position as president, they represent a significant shift in the political power structure during the final two years of his term.
