Two people are feared dead after a fire swept through the North Industrial Area branch of Duraplast Ghana in Accra in the early hours of Thursday, October 1, 2026.
One of the reported victims is said to be a two-week-old baby, although the identities of those feared dead had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.
The fire reportedly broke out within the industrial enclave, with thick smoke and flames spreading through the affected area and raising concern among workers and residents.
An eyewitness, Mohammed, claimed the blaze may have started after a gas cylinder exploded while a woman was away from the area where she had been cooking for her children.
“Some woman was cooking for her children and she went out and one of the children increased it and then the cylinder exploded,” he said.
The account has not been independently confirmed, and authorities are expected to establish the official cause of the fire.
Earlier reports from the scene indicated that firefighters faced difficulties accessing the area as the blaze intensified. Two fire tenders had arrived, while witnesses appealed to residents to clear the way for personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service to operate.
