The NPP will push for more women to benefit from government appointments if the party wins the 2028 elections, National Women’s Organiser Mavis Hawa Koomson has said.
She said the party would seek a formal agreement with its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on how women would benefit from his proposed appointments across the country.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, Hawa Koomson said Dr Bawumia has promised to appoint 10 people in every constituency if he becomes president in 2028.
“He has already promised that when elected as president in 2028, in every constituency, he will give 10 appointments,” she said.
Hawa Koomson said the NPP would want to know how many of those positions would be allocated to women and ensure the commitment is followed through.
“So we would ask how many of these appointments will go to women. It’s as simple as ABC, and we would make sure he delivers,” she added.
She also spoke about the outcome of the NPP’s recent national executive elections, saying she was disappointed that neither of the two women who contested won their respective positions.
“I was sad and pained that the women who contested the recent NPP national executive elections didn’t win,” she said.
Hawa Koomson said she had hoped at least one of the candidates would join her in the party’s national leadership.
“They were just two, and I was hoping that at least one of them would join me because when women are in charge, they do things and do it well,” she said.
Despite their defeat, Hawa Koomson said she expected the party’s leadership to create other opportunities for women to take up key roles.
“But I know leadership is putting in place measures for us to get some women on board to work with,” she said.
She added that increasing women’s participation in government would remain important to her.
“We must make sure the voices of women will be heard,” she said.
