The team of businessman and former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says it has not received official confirmation on whether he is among the 863 convicted persons granted presidential pardon by President John Dramani Mahama.

President Mahama announced the exercise on October 5, 2026, as part of activities marking Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary. The decision was taken under Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution following consultation with the Council of State.

The pardon covers several categories, including 819 first offenders, 13 persons aged 70 and above, six seriously ill inmates, and individuals whose death or life sentences have been commuted. Two people were also released under special recommendations, while three received pardons following petitions.

However, Dr Palgrave Boakye Danquah, spokesperson for Wontumi, said the team would wait for official communication before determining whether the businessman benefited from the decision.

“We don’t have the fine details yet and so if we are yet to be communicated to, we will let the public know,” he said.

He added that if Wontumi’s name appears among the beneficiaries, the team expects it to be under the special recommendation or petition category.

“We are just praying that the appeal goes through and also we are praying that the bail pending the appeal goes through,” Dr Boakye Danquah said.

Wontumi’s legal team is also pursuing a bail application, with the matter expected to come before the court on October 15, pending the determination of his appeal.

For now, the team says it will await official clarification on whether Wontumi is covered by the presidential pardon.
